Bringing Taiko to Our Schools

Students in Salt Lake, Utah and Davis counties have shown tremendous interest in taiko. This program works to provide schools with drums, bachi, and curriculum for classes or after school programs.

Drums for Schools 2023

American Preparatory Academy started a taiko class at their West Valley location in 2021. The class is growing, they need new drums, and they want to expand taiko to another location. The goal is to provide them with 20-25 drums for the 2023-24 school year.

Ignite Academy is starting an after school taiko program in September 2023. The goal is to provide 18-24 drums

A high school in Davis county is gearing up for an after school program in the 2023-24 school year. The goal is to provide them with 10-20 drums when they begin.

What We Need

To create 50-70 drums in time for these programs to begin, Taiko Utah needs help. Please reach out using the Contact Us page if you can help with anything below. Taiko Utah is a public charity and we will provide donation receipts for all material and monetary donations.

Materials

Fiber Barrels (70) - these are heavy cardboard barrels used in commercial and industrial applications; we repurpose them to reduce costs. New fiber barrels cost up to $100 each. To save space we need to find barrels of different sizes so they can be stacked in storage. If you know a source for these barrels, please reach out! We currently have a reliable source for 22” barrels. We are looking for more 24”, 19” and 17” barrels. These range from 55 gallon drums down to 15 gallons.

Wooden Broom Handles (175’) - we can cut these up and sand them down to make bachi, the drum sticks used with taiko. These could be dowels or wooden handles from any kind of rake, hoe, broom, etc. They need to be at least 15” long, and between 3/4” - 1 1/4” thick (2 3/8” - 4” around). Feet of wood: 175

Drumsticks - when we can’t make bachi, we also use standard drum sticks instead.

Packing Tape - higher quality tape that can be stretched without snapping provides better sound. We like to use T-Rex brand when we can get it. Feet of tape:

Duct Tape - Good quality tape improves the longevity of the drums. We like T-Rex or 3M brands. Feet of tape:

Painting Supplies - brushes (10), drop-cloths (5), cups to hold paint (10)

Acrylic Paint and Primer - Gesso (primer) and black paint are always welcome. Contact us about other colors.

Clear, Spray Finish - spray mod podge or anything else to put a clear finish coat on the drums

Plasti-dip - used to protect the bottom of the drums

Sand Paper - Grits ranging between 50-180, in form factors suited to the tools available.

Dry Erase Markers - used to track progress while taping drum heads

Tools

Plunge Router (2) - Used to cut portions of the drum body and the naname stands; 3/8” plunge bit with top bearing

Sanding Tools (3) - Drum, belt, orbital power sanders and sanding blocks

Files(5) - Wood and metal files used to clean up rough edges on the bachi, fiber barrels and metal rims

Scissors or Utility Knives (10) - for cutting tape while making drum heads

Plastic dish scrapers (10) - normally used to scrape away food stuck on dishes, these are useful when taping a drum head

Tailor’s Measuring Tape (5) - flexible measuring tapes used for sewing work much better on circular drums than metal ones used in construction

Logistics

Volunteers - anyone willing to paint or tape drum heads

Transportation - vehicles and drivers to pick up drums from donations, moving drums to and from project locations. Small box trucks, pick up trucks, minivans with removable seats and SUVs with folding seats

Locations - places where drums can be painted and stored to dry, places where volunteers can tape heads onto drums

Storage - places where barrels can be stored before turning them into drums, or drums can be stored before being delivered to schools
